Vera's Dad brought a Rubbish Truck to School

Vera's dad (Tim) brought a brand new rubbish truck to school.  He showed us how they scoop up the big bins.
We learnt that the trucks use hydraulic  fluid to lift the arm, the fluid is purple.  (Oscar)
Girls can drive the trucks, they are often better drivers.  (Amelie)
The rubbish produces methane gas, that gas is used to power houses. (Regan)
The methane can create an explosion, people have to be well trained. (Ashton)

Rosie's If I was In Charge of the World Poem

If I were in Charge of the World

If I were in charge of the world,
I’d cancel stinky cows that always
have a bad smell when you
go close to them.
I will even cancel
the little baby ones.

If I were in charge of the world,
There would be floating people
so they don’t have to pollute
with cars and there will even
be floating robbers so we can see
them steal our stuff.

If I were in charge of the world,
You wouldn’t have any landfill
so the earth wouldn’t even have
a single bit of glad wrap.

If I were in charge of the world,
A computer would be for free
and a person who always plays
the same game and sometimes
takes selfies, would still be

allowed to be in charge of the world.

Reduce Reuse and Recycle

Our topic is now all about how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  We have started our learning by watching this video and designing a mini poster to encourage people to recycle.

Measurement

We are learning about millilitres and litres. We had to measure and compare different amounts of liquid.  We used different sized containers and measuring jugs.

Room 14 Quotes about our Learning

"I learnt how to measure using a measuring jug" Jamie

"We used dye to help us measure, this helped us see the marks on the jug clearer" Isabelle

"We saw that 1000mls is the same as 1L" Rosie

"I learnt that 250mls is equal to 1 cup" Oscar

As a class we also worked out that there are 4 cups in a litre because if you add 250 mls together 4 times it will equal 1 litre, we could also say 250mls multiplied by 4.

Ashton's Teach the Teacher - Making a Geyser

Ashton showed us how to make a Geyser.  He explained to us that if you add Mentos to Coke it creates a reaction, the reaction causes carbon dioxide bubbles to come out of the coke faster.  He split everyone into four groups so they could make mini explosions in the class.  Lastly Aston took us all outside where he showed us a big one using a large bottle of Coke and Mentos, luckily Mrs Taylor and I were standing up-wind otherwise we would have been showered!

Have a look at his instructions if you want to try this, it was great fun!

Ashton explaining some of the science behind this geyser of Coke
Ashton giving all the groups equal amounts of coke and mentos
Everyone holding their Mentos and getting ready to drop!
Can you see the bubbles forming?

Fun with Science

We are doing science experiments to test if there is more bacteria on our hands before or after washing our hands in soap and water.  We are growing the bacteria on agar plates.  We wrote a hypothesis and method.  Now we will wait to see the results.

Matariki Celebrations

We read the story Seven Stars of Matariki by Toni Rollerston. In our art we are flying our kite at night in the wind, our kite will fly away to make the 7th star, can you see the wind gusts?  Come into the class to see the rest of our beautiful art.

Water Cycle Bags

As the sun heats up the water it condenses, the condensation will turn to precipitation and rain back to the bottom.
