Mia's Takahe Report

Takahes
By Mia Tsai
Do you know what a Takahe is?  A Takahe is a New Zealand bird.  Takahes are flightless and is endangered

Takahe is a type of bird.  Found by Dr Geoffrey Orbell that takahes are not extinct.  Takahe’s fossil bones were first found in 1848.  Takahes are very endangered.  If some New Zealanders see them people will have to move them.

Takahes have two short legs.  A short beak.  Green and blue feathers.  Takahes have a green back and a blue body.  They also have a really big bill.  Takahes are really strong.

Takahes usually eat 15.5 kg a day.  They like to eat tussock seeds,  and other kinds of seeds when it’s available.  In winter when there is not much seeds,  they go the forest for shelter and mainly eat starchy rhizomes from green fern.

Takahes have green and blue feathers for it’s back.  Red feet which are very strong.  Takahes have massive bill to crack seeds.  Takahes are really strong.

Takahes were first thought to be extinct and now they are endangered.  Takahe's fossil bones were first found in 1848.  They were then rediscovered 100 years later by Dr Geoffrey orbell. Takahes are hunted by Stoats.

Takahes are safe but endangered, we need to keep them safe from predators and keep them safe from being extinct.

Ray's Hammerhead Shark Report

Hammerhead shark
By Ray Shi

Shark …. you probably thought of a great white shark, but no, today’s topic is the hammerhead shark which has a hammer shaped head.

Hammerhead sharks are fish that give birth to live young like other sharks do. Hammerhead sharks live for 20 to 30 years and they live in the ocean.

The hammerhead shark has an unbelievably small mouth and because it is a shark it is near the top of the food chain. For some reason it has an extra dorsal fin at the end and the largest hammerhead shark is about 7 meters long.

The hammerhead shark eats fish, stingrays, squids, octopuses and crustaceans. It gets it’s food from pinning it to the ocean floor and as i said before it lives in the ocean.

The hammerhead shark has some very interesting adaptations. The first one of course is the “hammer” head which gives it good eyesight. Another one would be the extra dorsal fin which helps it swim and they have big nostrils NOT used for breathing, they are used for smelling.

Here is something very weird about the hammerhead shark three species of the hammerhead shark don't have a hammer shaped head! These three species are the scoophead, the bonnethead and the scalloped bonnethead.

The hammerhead shark is vulnerable and people are cutting the fins off for shark fin soup so if you see one don't kill it.

Rosie's Kiwi Report - check out her paragraphs!

Kiwis
             By Rosie Yang

New Zealand's special bird is ……… Kiwi.  Kiwis are a special nocturnal animal that is endemic to New Zealand. Kiwis very rare and it is endangered.  Kiwis are a flightless bird from New Zealand.

There are three different species of Kiwis. The brown kiwi, the great spotted Kiwi, and the little spotted Kiwi. Kiwis can live for about 20 - 30 whole years. There are only about 7,000 kiwis left in the world.

Female kiwis are bigger than male Kiwis. The Great spotted Kiwi are usually 40 cm tall but the the little spotted kiwis are only about 25 cm tall. Kiwis use their
nostrils on the end of their beak to smell. The brown Kiwi are usually 2500 grams.

Brown Kiwis eat worms, berries, seeds, fruit, and all sorts of bugs. On the North island, Brown kiwis live in forests, bushes, and pine plantations. Kiwis diet is not as much as humans but that is a lot to the Kiwis. Kiwis also eat Kahikatea, Hinau, Coprosma, and Bush lawyer.

Kiwi’s beak is very long. It’s so long that it's even bigger than its head! Kiwis are very good at camouflage in its surroundings in the nocturnal. Kiwis name came from ‘Kivi’. Kiwis meat diet are usually underground.

In New Zealand, Kiwis only hunt in day time on Stewart Island. Kiwis act a lot like hedgehogs. In Auckland, Kiwis are only found in the Auckland zoo and nowhere else.During the daylight hours, the male and female Kiwis sleep separately in day shelter burrows. Some shelter burrows may be a deep hole in a rotten log, or a hollow among the roots of a large tree. The shelter burrows are not used for nesting.

Kiwis are a very special and endangered bird that are endemic to New Zealand so we should look after them so that they won't be extinct. We only have about 7,000 Kiwis in New Zealand left. Kiwis have been caught everywhere like possum traps. The Great Spotted Kiwi is a endangered bird with a range that is shrinking.

King fisher’s nests are in river banks, people don’t ever use king fishers  feathers to make clothes!

King-fisher’s love to eat fish of course! But they like to eat small crabs, large insects, spiders, earthworms, bread, lizards, mice and tadpoles! Even Maori rarely ate king fishers! But even though they are really common, you only can see them on wires near water, trees near water, bridges near water, fence poles near water or rocks.

There are 87 species of king fishers. Did you know that tree king fishers don’t eat fish? How  long are there borrows are you ask? Well the answer is 2-8 feet long!
