Today Room 14 had an Enviro Day with Mrs Daniel. We read about worms, dug up worms, watched worms and even found a new type of worm none of us had seen before.
Also, before morning tea we explored the native bush walk. We identified the native trees, but also discovered some pest plants too.
After our break it was time to analyse our lunchboxes; We asked ourselves, "After I've eaten everything what will be left for the worm bin, compost, recycling or landfill?" The Enviro Stars had nothing at all for the landfill. Well done them.
In the afternoon we listened to "Diary of a Worm" and weeded the edible gardens. We also fed the soil with worm tea from the worm farm.
Here's what we thought about our day:
"I learnt gardening is fun." Chanel
"Worms have an important job." Isabelle
"We're learning to take care of the environment." Vera
"We've been pulling out weeds, cause they're not supposed to be there; they'll take space and nutrients from our veges." Mia
"I liked weeding. I learnt white flatworms eat earthworms." Ben
"Touching things is fun no matter what it is ... not poo!" Tom
Welcome to Room 14's blog for 2016. We are a class of energetic year 3/4 learners and our teacher is Mrs Fowler

Our Butterfly Hatched
This morning our butterfly hatched, we watched it come out of the chrysalis and start to dry out its wings. They have doubled in size!

Monarch Butterfly Time Lapse
We watched this time lapse video of a caterpillar going through metamorphosis. We were amazed by how the whole butterfly could fit in there. Thomas' caterpillars all went missing, he thinks they were eaten by wasps; they prey on juicy catterpillars.
Vera's Chrysalis
This morning Vera shared with us about her chrysalis, she has brought one to school so we can all see it hatch into a beautiful butterfly. Catterpillars go through metamorphisis like we learnt about when the tadpoles visited. Vera told us that when the chrysalis goes black then the butterfly is about ready to hatch, we can't wait!
